Olympus Stylus 500 Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 6.67 (out of 10)
I was pleasantly surprised with the Olympus Stylus 500 when I opened the box and held it in my hands for the first time. And I'm still quite impressed. These days, Olympus digital cameras don't seem to get as much exposure as other digital cameras, unfortunately, but the Olympus Stylus 500 is one slick camera that gives other cameras in its class a run for their money. It may not be the thinnest camera in its class, but it's definitely got the features and the price to compete.

| The Olympus Stylus 500 is the latest in the compact Stylus line of digital cameras from that company. Featuring a 5.0-megapixel CCD, 3x lens, "all-weather" body design, and compact size, the Olympus Stylus 500 Digital breaks away from preceding Stylus Digital models by losing the manually sliding lens cover and the optical viewfinder. Instead, the Stylus 500 Digital offers a large, 2.5-inch LCD monitor for image composition, and protects the lens with a much smaller automatic lens cover that moves in an out of place when the camera is turned on or shut down. Like other Stylus Digital models though, the fully automatic system requires very little user intervention with only a handful of creative options, but has the benefits of 20 preset Scene modes and a QuickTime Movie mode (with sound). |

| The µ (Mju) digital series (sold as Stylus in the USA) has been very good for Olympus. With six cameras in the current range, from the pretty little µ-mini Digital S to this, the µ Digital 500, they offer a combination of style, quality and robust construction that few other manufacturers can match. For customers looking for a fashionable camera that they can slip into a pocket the µ cameras are an ideal choice. They are not the cheapest cameras on the market, but for what they offer they are quite reasonably priced. |

| The Olympus Stylus 500 ($399) is a compact point-and-shoot, weatherproof camera. By weatherproof I mean that it can take a splash -- it's not equipped to go swimming. Other features include a 5 Megapixel CCD, 3X optical zoom lens, and large 2.5" LCD display. How does this latest Stylus perform? Find out now in our review! |

| The Olympus Stylus 500, also known as the µ Digital 500 in Europe, comes to the market with a 5-megapixel 1/2.5-inch CCD and a TruePic Turbo image processor. This digital camera is very much built for the point-and-shoot audience with minimal manual control and 21 automatic shooting modes. Like the rest of Olympus' Stylus line, the 500 is weather-proofed with rubber gaskets and seals within its housing, enabling the camera to endure a few splashes, but it shouldn't be dunked in a river. The 3.9 x 2.2 x 1.2-inch Stylus 500 has a 3x optical zoom lens that fully retracts into the camera body and is protected by a snapping lens cap. The body design has omitted the optical viewfinder and instead relies solely upon a large 2.5-inch LCD screen. The Stylus 500 ships with a 32MB xD-Picture Card and retails for US $349.99.

| The Olympus Mju Digital 500 (aka Stylus 500) is a compact weatherproof 5 megapixel digital camera, with a 3x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 35-105mm on a 35mm camera), and a large 2.5" TFT screen. The camera is enclosed in a silver or navy blue metal body. It records unlimited 320 x 240 / 15fps videos with sound. |

| Okay, so the new Stylus looks better than the old one. How does it perform? I'm please to report the 500 is not only better than any previous Stylus digital, it is better than any previous Olympus compact digital camera. Like the competition, Olympus has developed a dedicated image processing chip. Dubbed TruePic Turbo, it does a bang-up job of accelerating startup time, autofocus lock, and shutter response. This performance boost places the 500 right in the pack of thin-zooms. |

| "The Olympus Stylus 500 should definitely be on your shopping list of possible digital cameras if you're looking for a tiny, easy-to-use 5 megapixel camera with a large LCD screen. The quality of the photos is excellent and the camera starts up very fast. You may need to take a little more care with this camera due to its construction and susceptibility to scratches, but overall, it's a great little camera that you'll be happy to have with you. " |
